New York City: Many Worlds in One Space
TOP 5 TIPS FOR A GREAT STAY IN New York
March 1, 2020 By- Emmy
1. If Broadway shows are your thing—you can’t do better than going directly to the box office on the morning of the show to receive the best seats at the best prices.
I recently spoke with a returning guest who brings a group of lovely high-school students to see shows on Broadway every year, and we agreed—if you can, it’s best to book direct. If you need group sales, or want tickets to a particularly popular and brand-new show (one with a celebrity star, recently out of previews, etc.) then of course you will want to call the theatre’s box office line about advance purchase. There are of course the TKTS booth locations, the nearest only a 10-minute walk from us-- but here are the advantages of booking at the box office on the morning-of:
You get to speak with a box office representative who has seen the show, probably multiple times, and who has an intimate knowledge of the house. They will be able to recommend the best seat for you (house left vs. house right, mezzanine vs. orchestra, you name it).
Each box office opens at 10:00 AM each day with a certain number of open seats called “rush tickets.” These are available first-come-first-served daily and at a fabulously reduced price. They are often the best seats in the house, too. For popular shows, you may see a line forming outside the theatre as early as 6:00 AM, but often and often, going to the box office any time before lunchtime will yield success.
2. Book tables in advance.
Unlike Broadway tickets, dining is usually something we like to book in advance. With so many wonderful spots for a variety of cuisines here in New York, it would be a shame to get stuck into the tourist trap of a sub-par $18 hot dog when there is a hidden gem of a shawarma place just around the corner. We are full of recommendations so if Yelp feels overwhelming, please consult us. We love to chat about our favorite foodie spots all over the city!
3. Think outside the box—or allow us to do it for you!
There is a reason for the iconic checklist of “See the Statue of Liberty, see a Broadway musical, see the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn bridge…” they are wonderful! Truly wonderful, and often we can get you discounts for these treasures. However, depending on the time of year and the days of the week you are visiting, you might be missing out on something a little more unusual, a little bit special—something the locals know about, like a secret speakeasy bar with magicians performing eye-popping feats, an underground burlesque show with opera singers and famous comediennes, a world-renown jazz trio playing a lounge on the upper east side with no cover at the door…
Sometimes it’s nice to spice up your itinerary with something a little out of the ordinary—because what is New York if not a little mysterious and surprising? You can always chat to us about current offerings in the city for a one-of-a-kind experience in our gorgeous city.
Yes, transit. We love walking, walking is a great way to see the city—but this island can be exhausting enough with all the wonderful things you want to see and do with your time here, and it is always best to have a little extra help getting around.
Do you know about Via? Many don’t; it’s a less expensive version of Uber only available in New York and Chicago for now. We can get you a code for $10 free credit on the app to start you off, and show you how to use it—it’s just like Uber, Lyft, and other ride-share apps. Its exclusivity keeps costs low and you’ll be riding around in the same cars with the same drivers for these other well-known taxi alternatives, just at a lower cost. Big win.
Metro cards—we love MTA. We really do. You can go ANYWHERE in the city for a mere $2.75. Yes. New York has perhaps the most egalitarian transit system out there—and we often have spare metro cards to save you the $1 startup fee. We can let you know some tips and tricks for getting around as well as giving full and detailed directions, maps, and a confidence boost if this is your first time using the subway. PRO TIP: If you are here for more than 4 days, I would almost always recommend buying a weekly pass for the metro. Metro cards work for all busses too and with an unlimited card, you have the luxury of never running out of credit during your stay and taking as many rides as you like. You’re free to zip about carefree.
Finally—bikes! Now personally I love getting around by bike and along with feeling good about yourself and the planet, you get great views of the city. It’s super inexpensive and New York actually has a great deal of bike lanes. Chat to us about CitiBike, local bike rentals and the best routes.
5. The most important tip for a great stay in NYC: Relax!
This is YOUR CITY. That’s the magical thing about New York—it’s for everyone. Fancy a cool stroll in the park followed by a vegan scone? You can have it! Want to dance all night and watch the sun rise over the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges? You got it. Museums ALL DAY LONG and a bottle of wine at dinner? It’s yours. Don’t feel the pressure to check everything off your list and don’t spend your time collecting photographs of the places you think you “aught” to go in New York. Take time to enjoy your vacation here and just know—we’ve got your back and the 414 is always here to welcome you “home.” There is too much to see here in one trip so relax, enjoy, take some time to eat cheese and drink a glass of complimentary wine with us here at Social Hour, and follow your joy. We look forward to being a part of your New York City stay.
